More info about the project Transformation of Sound - Japan

The aim for this project is to open up for a creative exchange between a new generation of contemporary improvising artist, active in Europe and Japan. With the double bass, Joel Grip will do research about the Japanese improvised and contemporary art scene by organizing sessions, concerts, discussions, and performances, all over Japan. An exchange where the improvisation and the very personal creativity will be in focus. All meetings between the artists will be documented and put in file for possible further collaboration.

The project will continue after the two-month long period in Japan is over. With focus on a new generation of active artists, in a region of Japan that seems to be most suitable, this project aims to establish a collective which will have the possibility to stand in direct contact with collectives in Europe.  Sweden – where the record label Umlaut Sweden and the festival Hagenfesten are amplifiers of new music, poetry, dance and visual art – is already in close collaboration with collectives in Paris (Umlaut France) and in Berlin (Umlaut Berlin). The establishing of an Umlaut Japan would not only open up for a professional interactive meeting place online (www.umlautrecords.com), but first and foremost make possible an artistic creative exchange and further on ease what for independent artists is extremely demanding, to make oneself heard. Under the great umbrella of Umlaut Records, the around 40 active members of Umlaut Sweden, Umlaut France, and Umlaut Berlin, are ready to include a Japanese collective in effort of continuing braking the borders between us, and helping making ourselves heard on each side of the globe. By doing this we would in an effortless way reach a greater audience and most importantly, learn how to listen to and understand different cultures and expressions.

This project would be an important step in the continuous development of contemporary cultures in general, but also play an important role for the individual creativity of each artist.
